Carnival in Venice

February 16, 2012

Just returned from an exhilarating weekend in Venice photographing the annual Carnival. It was a visual treat. The weather was colder than in the UK and some of the canals had frozen over. The freezing weather didn’t stop the poseurs from donning their masks and  doing what they do best… posing! Every tourist had a camera, and most people wanted their photo taken with one of the masked & costumed poseurs - it was like one big chaotic & myriad coloured photo session coming full on at you everywhere you looked. The fixed and expressionless nature of the masks hides the true identities of the wearer, so the element of mystery is constantly maintained. It would be interesting to see these faces without the masks.

From one bubble to another…

February 2, 2012

I’m recently back from a trip up the coast of California, or La-la land. (Actually I call it ‘Larry Land’ after Larry David who lives in LA - I’m a huge fan of Curb your Enthusiasm). We started out in San Diego, hopping across to Mexico, then driving up the coast staying with friends in LA Santa Monica and San Francisco. Every day was brilliant sunshine with sparkling blue skies, just the antedote for a grey british winter. Here is a small selection of personal work from my trip which is part of an ongoing project which will eventually be exhibited and published.
